Rules for success:
1. Be considerate
2. Be around a lot
3. Be good at what you do (mostly optional)

I just noticed two things:

1) Funk and funky music are rather unpopular in the clubs right now. In what many blogs consider to be the “cutting edge” of bass music, there is no funkyness. This is strange, because funk was dance music long before electronic dance music.

2) A continuously-mixed, beatmatched set is not the only way to have a great dance party. Many DJs in Boston play exclusively one genre of music and they play it at one tempo for their entire hour-long set. 20-30 years ago, DJs would sometimes not mix or beatmatch at all, and they still held dancefloors. Just because seamless sets made a lot of sense in a few key clubs in the mid-80s doesn’t mean they’re the only way to do things. A bar is not the Warehouse or the Paradise Garage. Free your mind!
